MORGANTON, N.C. — On June 10, 2026, Morganton Department of Public Safety personnel responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Ridgedale Drive shortly before 5:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered a working fire involving the attic and roof area of a single-family residence. Initial reports indicated smoke was visible from the residence, and callers later advised the home had possibly been struck by lightning during a passing storm.

Firefighters quickly initiated fire suppression operations and were able to bring the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes, preventing further extension throughout the residence.

The fire caused significant damage to the attic, roof structure, and several interior rooms. All occupants safely evacuated the residence prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. One homeowner was evaluated on scene and declined medical treatment.

Morganton Public Safety personnel assisted the displaced family with contacting the American Red Cross for emergency housing assistance. City Electric responded to assist with securing utilities to the residence, and the City of Morganton Building Inspections Department responded to evaluate the structure.

The fire's cause suggests the incident may have resulted from a lightning strike.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Agencies assisting included Burke County EMS, City Electric, the City of Morganton Building Inspections Department, and the American Red Cross.
