Public Safety issues burn ban

Morganton Public Safety is issuing a local Open Burn Ban due to extreme fire danger conditions throughout the City of Morganton. The purpose of this Burn Ban is to protect life and property. OPEN BURN BAN EFFECTIVE 5:00 PM, MARCH 3, 2025

This Burn Ban will apply to ALL outside burning that is being conducted within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling; including but not limited to fire pits, grills, leaf and yard debris. The burning of any material other than natural vegetation is illegal, regardless of Burn Ban status.

This Burn Ban does not affect North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) permitted, controlled, and attended fires that extend beyond 100 feet of an occupied dwelling, this activity is regulated by the NCFS.

Pursuant to the North Carolina State Building Code, Fire Prevention Code 2018 Edition:

307.1.1 Prohibited Open Burning. Open burning shall be prohibited when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous.

Violators of the Burn Ban will be subject to a $100.00 citation from the City of Morganton Department of Public Safety, for the first offense which doubles per subsequent occurrence.
