Not cutting it, Man charged with DWI while on a lawnmower.

On November 19, 2025, at approximately 8:51 p.m., officers observed a lawnmower being operated on East Union Street near East Fleming Drive following reports of reckless driving on U.S. 70. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the lawnmower, which was being operated by Zachary Norton, 38, of Valdese. Norton was determined to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of an impairing substance. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the following offenses:

  • Driving While Impaired (DWI)

  • No Liability Insurance

  • Failure to Display Registration Plate

  • Brake/Stop Light Equipment Violation

A records check revealed that this incident constitutes Norton’s second DWI offense, with the previous charge occurring on July 4, 2024.
