Morganton JAM

JAM Participants in 2024 Christmas Parade

Morganton JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) is an after-school program that offers small-group instruction in traditional old-time and bluegrass music. The program is offered to children ages 7-17 (6 for ukulele). Students can learn fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and bass, or take a singing class. They will enjoy learning from visiting artists, taking field trips, and getting an introduction to the music unique to our community.

When: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm or 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The day and time will be determined by the student's skill level and instrument choice.

Where: Collett Street Recreation Center

Cost: $60 per semester per instrument. The fall semester is September-December, and the Spring semester is January-May. Rental instruments are available with a $40 deposit and a $10 monthly fee.

Registration: Registration and payment are made online at https://secure.rec1.com/NC/morganton-parks-recreation-nc/catalog

Registration for the JAM 2026-2027 season for returning students will run from June 17 to July 2.

Registration for new students will run  from July 15 to 31.

Registration will be online. Registration fees will not be due at this time. Students will sign up only for the instrument they want to play next year. We will be offering all the same classes as this year; however, if we do not get enough registrations (banjo, singing, etc.), that class will be dropped. We are considering dividing the singing class by age if we get enough participants.

Class size is limited. For more information, call the Collett Street Recreation Center at 828-438-5352.
