Join Our Engineering Team
The City of Morganton is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Civil Design Technician II to join our Development and Design Department. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a mix of office and field work, a collaborative team environment, and wants to contribute to meaningful public infrastructure projects that impact the community.
What You’ll Do
As a Civil Design Technician II, you will assist engineers and the City Engineer in the planning, design, and execution of municipal projects. Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing construction drawings, bid documents, and cost estimates
- Assisting with project management and coordination between City staff, contractors, and engineers
- Inspecting construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and standards
- Developing maps and drawings using CAD and GIS software
- Supporting surveying efforts and conducting deed research
- Reviewing plans for public and private utility installations
- Assisting with water and sewer availability verification
- Managing records, reports, and databases
- Supporting easement and right-of-way acquisition processes
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking candidates who bring a strong technical foundation along with excellent organizational and communication skills. Desired knowledge & skills include:
- Engineering design principles and construction practices
- CAD, GIS, and general computer applications
- Ability to analyze technical documents and prepare reports
- Surveying methods and mapping systems
- Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry)
- Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field
- 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license
Anticipated starting pay is $52,260 - $57,000, depending on experience. Morganton values and strives for diversity and inclusion in its workforce.
