The Tony Award-Winning Broadway revival of The Color Purple is hitting the stage at CoMMA in a little more than a week. Tickets are on sale now for the February 27th show.
The Color Purple is a musical based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker, and the 1985 film adaptation of the novel. The show tells the story of Celie, an African-American woman in the American South from the early to mid-20th century.
The story follows Celie’s journey after her father offers her to a local farmer in need of a woman to raise his children. She is torn from her beloved younger sister and begins to learn about the world outside her family home. As years go by, Celie becomes resigned to her unfortunate lot in life. But when newcomers enter her life and bring their fresh perspective, she begins to understand that there must be more to life.
This story about the experience of African-American women in the rural south in the 20th century received much critical acclaim. The Color Purple was hailed as “a direct hit to the heart” by The Hollywood Reporter. The New York Times wrote that The Color Purple is a “ravishingly reconceived production that is a glory to behold.”
The original Broadway production ran from 2005 to 2008, earning eleven Tony Award nominations in 2006. An enthusiastically acclaimed Broadway revival opened in late 2015, winning two 2016 Tony Awards—including Best Revival of a Musical. The Broadway Revival has continued to tour after the show moved off of Broadway.
