After a successful inaugural year, the Historic Morganton Festival, Inc., is excited to announce the second annual M.A.D.E. (Morganton Arts Design and Engineering) Competition entitled the “Junkyard Design Challenge.” The competition will take place Friday, September 6th and Saturday, September 7th during the Morganton Festival in Downtown Morganton. The M.A.D.E competition is presented by the Historic Morganton Festival, Inc., and Burke County Public Schools, and is sponsored by Continental, Leviton, Work in Burke, the City of Morganton, and Western Piedmont Community College.

While last year’s ECO Chair Challenge highlighted students’ abilities to design, construct, and present a chair made solely out of cardboard, this year’s competition will have an interesting twist. The 2019 M.A.D.E. Competition is an on-site engineering, design, and build challenge. Festival goers will be able to watch, first- hand, the design process and construction techniques utilized by our area students as they unfold in real-time. The students will only be able to use the materials provided to them on-site in order to complete the challenge.

M.A.D.E. engages middle and high school students in an innovative competition designed to showcase desirable, employable skill sets to our region’s industries. Competing students will demonstrate critical thinking, design, engineering and innovation skills during the event. These are talents that employers look for in technology driven workplaces in our county and across the state and region.

Want to know more about the “Junkyard Design Challenge”? Be sure to follow the Historic Morganton Festival’s social media page in the weeks leading up to the competition. The competition’s criteria will only be shared with the participants the week before the competition, which leaves the students only a few days to plan a successful strategy.

The competition is open to Burke County Middle and High Schools with spots also available for regional competitors.

The criteria for M.A.D.E. 2020 will be announced on Saturday, September 7th during M.A.D.E. 2019.
