On December 6, 2020, at approximately 2:21 a.m., Morganton Public Safety Officers responded to a traffic accident where a pick-up truck had slid off the road down an embankment on Sanford Dr.
Contact was made with the driver, Tonya Baker, who stated she was traveling on Sanford Dr. Baker stated she noticed police lights and thought it was a checkpoint. Baker advised she attempted to turn around to avoid it but slid off the road. When Officer’s approached the pick-up truck they noticed a small safe located underneath the bed of the truck on the ground.
After further investigation and a search of the vehicle drug paraphernalia and the keys to the safe were located. During a search of the small safe, approximately 190 grams of Methamphetamine was located along with a small bag of marijuana and other drug-related items. Morganton Public Safety Criminal Investigations was contacted and responded to the scene to take over the case.
Tonya Cook Baker DOB 04/15/1973 of 906 Jamestown Rd Apt F4 was arrested and charged with the following crimes:
-N.C.G.S. 20-28, DRIVING WHILE LICENSE REVOKED
-N.C.G.S. 90-95(H) (3b), TRAFFICKING METHAMPHETAMINE
-N.C.G.S. 90-95(A) (3), SIMPLE POSSESSION OF SCHEDULE VI
Baker was placed in the Burke County Jail under a $25,000 secure bond with an initial court appearance on December 7, 2020.
