The Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to a reported structure fire on Park Street. Burke County Emergency Communications Center alerted MDPS at 8:23 pm on Wednesday night, November 8, 2017. Everyone was out of the structure as Morganton Public Safety personnel arrived to observe smoke coming from the house. Lt. Rhodes of the Morganton Public Safety Department said that the fire began in the basement of the residence, under a work bench, quickly spreading to the ceiling area of the basement with fire extension in an upstairs bedroom. The cause of the fire could not be determined due to the extent of the fire in the basement area. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire and perform ventilation operations in the residence. There were no injuries. The residence suffered moderate damage to the basement area and the rear bedroom. The American Red Cross responded to assist the family with temporary living arrangements. Quick notification by neighbors was essential to enabling the fire department to arrive in a timely manner preventing catastrophic damage. Burke County Emergency Services responded to the scene as well.
