On November 3, 2017 at approximately 12:57 a.m., officers received a report that Gregory Jeweler’s had been broken into by multiple suspects wearing dark ski masks who fled in a White Nissan four door passenger vehicle.  Officers arrived on scene to discover the front door smashed in along with several jewelry case broken into. While responding to the call, PSO Vue noticed a white four door passenger vehicle traveling on Burkemont Ave at a high rate of speed.  PSO Vue then turned on the vehicle and it turned onto I-40 east bound and accelerated away from him.  PSO Vue activated his lights and sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver failed to stop.  The vehicle chase continued east bound on I-40 reaching speeds up to 120 mph.  The vehicle then had the left front tire blow out approaching exit 123 and had to stop. All five occupants of the vehicle were then taken into custody by officers.  Items from the breaking and entering were located inside of the vehicle. The suspects were:

 

Kelvie Brooks, 24, of Cherryville, NC

 

Garrett Fredrick, 24, of Kings Mountain, NC

 

 Male Juvenile 17, of Blacksburg, SC

 

Hailey Skarpalezos, 18, of Blacksburg, SC

 

Jose Rodriguez, 23, of Kings Mountain, NC

 

Two of the suspects arrested are validated gang members. All of the subjects were taken to the magistrate and then transported to the Burke Catawba Detention Center where they received a $75,000 secure bond (Except Hailey Skarpalezos-$90,000) with an initial appearance in court on November 3, 2017. All of the subjects were charged with Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny after Breaking and Entering, and Possession of Burglary tools. The driver, Hailey Skarpalezos, was also charged with Felony Speeding to Elude Arrest and several other misdemeanor traffic violations.    Morganton Department of Public Safety was assisted by the Burke County Sheriff’s Department, NC Highway Patrol, and the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department.
