On September 16, shortly after 10:00 pm, Public Safety officers responded to the Comfort Inn on Burkemont Ave. Burke County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call that a child was found under water at the indoor pool of the Comfort Inn. EMS arrived and transported the six-year-old boy to CHS Morganton where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation shows, the six-year-old, was swimming in the pool with friends and family, when he moved along the side of the pool holding onto the edge. The boy moved to the deeper end of the pool and his hands slipped off the side. According to the boy's father, he did not know how to swim and was told to stay near the shallow end.
Visibility was poor in the water and after about ten minutes, the family noticed he was missing. The boy was pulled from the water and nearby adults began cpr.
The family was in Morganton for local baseball games and were staying at the Comfort Inn before returning home to the Waynesville, NC area.
