Water Resources Department

The City of Morganton Water Resources Department manages water and wastewater utility services in the City of Morganton. The department consists of the Water Treatment Division, Wastewater Treatment Division, and the Collection and Distribution Division. Water Resources also serves parts of Burke and Caldwell counties. 

The city water plant draws water from the Catawba River and produces an average of 8.8 MILLION gallons of potable water per day. The city wastewater plant treats about 4.7 Million gallons of sewer a day. Treated sewer is released back into the Catawba River. The Distribution Division maintains more than 320 MILES of water lines and more than 200 MILES of sewer lines.

Water Resources is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Water Treatment Division operates the City's water treatment plant, which produces and distributes an average of 8.8 million gallons of drinking water per day (the plant has an 18 million-gallons-per-day capacity). The plant has 5 million gallons of on-site finished water storage and a dewatering building to get rid of the solids that accumulate in the water treatment process. Eight pumping stations and 11 finished water storage tanks distribute water throughout the system. The water treatment plant is located in the western part of the City and draws water directly from the Catawba River.

The Wastewater (Sewer) Treatment Division operates the City's sewer plant, which treats an average of 4.7 millions gallons of sewer per day (the plant has a 10.5- to 13-million-gallons-per-day capacity). Division staff manages the different treatment aspects of the facility including state-certified laboratory facilities, the pretreatment program, and a compost process to get rid of bio-solids.
