Public Safety Department

The Public Safety Department is responsible for providing police and fire services in the city. The department is committed to protecting the lives, property, and constitutional rights of all residents and visitors in the community by providing professional law enforcement and fire protection services. The City of Morganton City Council adopted the Public Safety concept in the late 1970s.

The Police to Citizen (P2C) website provides access to public police reports, a daily bulletin of events, and a community calendar along with many other items of interest. In addition, you may file a report of a non-emergency crime directly to the Police Department via the site.

The Citizen Police Academy is a community-oriented program that offers participants the chance to learn more about how the City of Morganton Department of Public Safety operates. The goal of the Academy is to open lines of communication between the residents and the Public Safety Department so that participants are better-informed about what the police profession entails.

The Field Operations Bureau manages police and fire operations that include the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and Special Operations Division. Specialty units within Public Safety include the School Resource Officer Program, D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education), Community Policing, the K-9 program and Police and Fire Reserves. Morganton Public Safety Officers also participate in the Burke County Narcotics Task Force.

In 2009, the Morganton City Council adopted an ordinance permitting and regulating the operation of golf carts on public streets within the City of Morganton. Registered golf carts can be driven on designated streets within the City of Morganton, after owners have received a Golf Cart Permit.

The City of Morganton has approved four run/walk courses on City streets. There must be a minimum of 75 participants in order to block roadways for the event. The event will not be allowed the following year if the minimum participants is below 75. If more than 2,000 participants are expected for the event, the route will need to be re-evaluated by the City of Morganton and Morganton Public Safety. These courses do not require a permit from NCDOT.

The Public Safety Department requires permits for block parties, open burning, parades, and other special events. The purpose of the application process is to provide information about your event or activity to the City of Morganton in order to make determinations regarding public safety and to determine the involvement of various departments and agencies.The applicant is responsible for providing complete and accurate information on the application, including an attached detailed site plan. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. A pre-planning meeting may be required.

The City of Morganton will participate in the 2017 urban archery season (archery equipment only) scheduled for Jan. 14 through Feb. 18, 2017. The season dates are set and authorized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
